Create App Specific Password in Gmail

In this post, I will guide on how to create application specific password in Gmail, you may need it when you need to login to any non Gmail application (e.g if you are migrating from @gmail.com to Google Workspace with Googally as your migration partner).

You would need to turn on Google’s Two step verification as a prerequisite to create application specific password.

Step 1 : Login to your Gmail.com account with your email address and password.

Step 2 : Click on the your Profile picture/alphabet in the top right, and then go to Manage Your Account as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3 : Click on Security tab on the left, and scroll down to ‘How you sign in to Google’ section. Here you will see 2-Step Verification is off, Click on it

Note : If you already see 2-Step verification as ON, you can skip this step and directly generate App Specific Password as shown later in this article.

Step 4 : Click on Turn on 2-Step Verification as shown below.

Step 5 : Google will ask for your phone number with the country, Please ensure that your country is selected (e.g U.S in the screenshot below) and then enter your phone number and click on Next button.

Google will now send you a verificaiton code on this number, you would need it for verification in the next step.

Step 6 : Enter the verification code which Google sent you on the number you provided, and then click on Verify button to verify it.

Step 7 : Once your phone is verified, you will see the ‘You’re now proteced with 2-Step Verification’ message as shown below.

You can now click on Done button to close this window.

P.S - If you are working with Googally.com to migrate from Gmail to Google Workspace, you would need to provide this app specific password either direclty to Googally or to someone in your office who is working with Googally.

You have successfully enrolled in 2-Step verification in Gmail, and have also created app specific password. For informative posts, please visit our blog at googally.com/blog.
